Social Media Marketing With Debra Aho-Williamson

posted by David Wolf on Apr 8, 2009 | Comments (11) | Permalink | Trackback URL

Debra Aho Williamson has been a keen observer of Internet marketing and advertising trends since 1993.

At eMarketer, she focuses on social network marketing, word-of-mouth marketing, virtual worlds and targeting online marketing to key demographic groups, including kids and teens, college students and women.

She’s been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, USA Today, BusinessWeek, the San Francisco Chronicle, Advertising Age, MediaPost and other publications.

Here are some of the talking points from the segment:

1. You’ve been in this space since 1993—-has anything totally surprised you in terms of the ways internet advertising and marketing has unfolded?
2. At eMarketer—-you’ve got a birds-eye view of how the world of social media is changing the landscape of marketing. What does social media do that traditional media simply cannot do?
3. The issue of brand control has certainly been a concern for many companies as they make their entrance into social media. How are you seeing companies manage their brands in a world that’s all about letting go of control, and harvesting authenticity from the consumer?
4. How do you see strategic possibilities evolving for companies that want to participate in social networks as advertisers—-how are they looking to approach the challenge?
5. Do you think it’s more effective for companies to create their own social networking platforms—-or is it a better idea to leverage the existing platforms that have huge traction?
6. How is search marketing evolving—-and what can we look forward to in terms of changes there?

  4. At the SMX Social Media Conference, I provided these 20 take-aways about social media on my blog…
To avoid duplicate content, here are three of them, you can link the rest.
Social Media Marketing (SMM) is terrific for link building, not for conversions. This is a major change for many marketers to internalize and incorporate into their offering.
SMM requires incredible organization on the part of the marketer. Both to keep track of a campaign and to make sure not to break out of acceptable tribal participation.
SMM link building requires a keen eye for linkbait that relates to your marketing goals and finesse to make sure its not overtly sales-like in presentation…

  6. Very nice. I will say that SEO today involves devoting at least 25% of time to social media marketing and participation. There simply isn’t a better way to get in touch with people in your industry quicker or more effective.

  9. What the press is doing to Palin is what they learned to do to Bush: allow nothing unfiltered to reach the masses.  She was 45 minutes of unfiltered at the convention and it damn near made Barry’s head explode.
