Hanson Hosein and Heather Hughes are award-winning digital filmmakers.
Their recent film Independent America: The Two-Lane Search for Mom & Pop was an early exercise in the use of digital technology in storytelling and ongoing interaction with its audience. It has been seen around the world, thanks to their innovative grassroots marketing campaign and blog.

Self-produced and self-financed, the award-winning documentary has also been featured by Yahoo!, USA Today, BusinessWeek, Variety, ABC News, National Public Radio, and has been broadcast by NHK Japan, SBS Australia and the Sundance Channel.

Hanson joined forces with partner, Heather Hughes for the film. The duo say they tried to make our 55-day trip without relying on interstate highways, corporate chain restaurants, motels or stores.

What they discovered, and experienced, was surprising. The expedition allowed them to capture an America at a historical and ideological crossroads, where even the health of its democracy hinges on the survival of independent business. And where many citizens are increasingly concerned that they have lost control over the nation’s large and powerful institutions. Which is why “local” matters more than ever.
